serve—Charitable Donations for 2009

Did you know that if you are an IRA owner, age 70½ or over, you can directly transfer tax-free up to $100,000 per year to an eligible charitable organization such as St. Tim’s through 2009? The funds must be contributed directly by the IRA trustee to St. Tim’s. Amounts so transferred are not taxable and no deduction is available for the amount given. Also, please plan ahead for the end of the year. Donors must deliver checks on or by December 31 in order to claim a charitable contribution deduction for 2009. Checks that are placed in the church offering during the first worship service in 2010 will not qualify even if the check is predated to 2009 or was actually written in 2009. Only checks that are written, mailed and postmarked in 2009 are deductible in 2009 though not received until 2010.
