Bishop Curry (pictured left) will be at St Timothy's for the 10:30am service on December 13, 2009 for confirmation. The sacrament of confirmation is described by our catechism as "...the rite in which we express a mature commitment to Christ, and receive strength from the Holy Spirit through prayer and the laying on of hands by a bishop." So, who should be confirmed? The catechism also says "It is required of those to be confirmed that they have been baptized, are sufficiently instructed in the Christian Faith, are penitent for their sins, and are ready to affirm their confession of Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord."
In other words, the sacrament of confirmation is for those desiring to be full members of the Episcopal Church, have already received the sacrament of baptism (not necessarily in the Episcopal Church), and are ready to profess a mature commitment to Christ.
In a nuts and bolts kind of explanation, confirmation not only is an expression of one's commitment to Christ and the laying on of hands from our bishop, but it also allows a person to vote in parish elections and to serve on the vestry (the parish governing body in the Episcopal Church).
We are certain there are more questions about confirmation, the Episcopal Church, St Timothy's, Christianity and more. That's why we are going to have four classes available on succeeding Sundays: November 15, 22, 29 and December 6 at 4pm in the Church Library (Gribbin Building). These classes will be led by Fr. Steve.
If would be most helpful if we could have a good ida of the number desiring confirmation. If you are interested, please fill out the following form. As always, feel free to contact Fr. Steve with any questions.
